Electric Conservation Efforts Urgently Needed Now
From Austin Energy:
The electric grid manager, ERCOT, is expecting statewide record electric use, as well as higher than normal generation outages as a result of the extreme cold temperatures across the system. ERCOT has issued an appeal asking Texans to begin reducing electricity use now through Tuesday to ensure there will be enough power to meet demand.
Customers can assist by:
Keeping their thermostat at 68 degrees or lower, if possible. Wear warm, comfortable clothing to help stay warm indoors instead of adjusting the thermostat.
Keeping doors and windows closed to minimize hot air from escaping the home.
Closing shades and blinds to reduce heat leaving home.
Switching the setting on ceiling fans to run clockwise at a low speed. This gentle updraft helps push warm air near the ceiling down into your living space.
Unplugging non-essential electronics as they still draw current.
Avoiding using large appliances like dryers during peak morning and evening hours.
When not in use, making sure your fireplace damper is closed to prevent heat from escaping up the chimney.
Not closing vents in unused rooms if you have central air and heat. This could increase pressure and cause duct leaks.
