Severe Freezing Temperatures Predicted – Protect your Pipes!
We are expecting severe freezing temperatures in the coming days. Please see below for tips to protect your pipes.
Precautions to Take Before Freezing Temperatures
Wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of the home.
Remove garden hoses from outside faucets. Insulate outside faucets with Styrofoam cover, or other protective covering.
Know where your property owner's cut-off valve is located and how to use it. The valve is normally located near the water meter box.
Precautions to Take During Extended Freezing Temperatures
Let water drip slowly from inside faucets (5-10 drips per minute)
Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow the heat to keep the pipes warm.
In unheated garages, shut off water to washing machines. Water softeners should be drained and protected from freezing temperatures.
Take extra precautions to protect pipes that have frozen in the past. Wrap in heat tape if possible.
Precautions if You Are Not Going to Be Home During Extended Freezing Temperatures
Shut water off at the property owner's cut-off valve.
Drain and Wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of the home.
Leave home heating system on at a high (normal) setting.
Open cabinet doors under sinks to help keep the pipes warm.
We encourage all customers to turn off irrigation systems prior to, and during, extended freezing temperatures.
If you experience a water line leak/break at your home, immediately turn off the water at the owner's cut-off valve and call a plumber. If you are unable to shut off the water, please call the City at 512-327-1838 for assistance.
Respectfully, The City of Rollingwood
